How to Use the PDF to Text Converter
Detailed instructions.
1. Pick the PDF file
Click the file input labeled “Choose File” or the blue upload button and select a PDF from your phone or computer. The converter accepts standard PDF files (the kind produced by office apps, scanners with OCR disabled, or exports from Google Docs/Microsoft Word).
2. Convert the PDF
After you choose a file, click the Convert PDF button. I recommend waiting until the “Converting…” indicator finishes — larger PDFs with many pages will take a little longer.
3. View and edit the extracted text
The extracted text shows inside the large editable box. You can:
- Read it directly on the page.
- Edit or clean it up (remove headers, page numbers, or hyphenation).
- Use your device keyboard to make quick changes.
4. Download or share the result
When you’re ready, use the Download .TXT button to save a local file named Converted-PDF-to-Text.txt. If you prefer to send the text to another app or person, use Share Text. On modern phones the tool will try to open your device share sheet; if that fails it will share a .txt file or copy the text to the clipboard as a fallback.
Tips for best results
- Selectable text > images: The tool extracts text that exists in the PDF. If your PDF is a scanned image (no selectable text), this converter will not extract the words — you would need OCR (optical character recognition) instead.
- Shorter pages convert faster: Very long PDFs (hundreds of pages) will take longer and could timeout on low-memory devices.
- Clean up afterwards: Run a quick scan for page headers, footers, or repeated page numbers and remove them manually in the editor before downloading.
Troubleshooting — common issues and fixes
Conversion doesn’t start
If nothing happens after you pick a file, try this:
- Make sure you actually selected a file (some browsers require you to click “Open” in the file dialog).
- Try a different PDF to check file integrity.
- Reload the page and try again (this refreshes the PDF library).
Extracted text is empty or garbled
Most likely the PDF contains only images (scanned pages) rather than selectable text. This tool does not perform OCR. If you need OCR, you’ll need a specialized OCR service or app.
Share button only copies text (Chrome mobile)
Some browsers (notably Chrome on Android) prefer sharing files or URLs and sometimes reject large raw-text sharing. In that case the tool will try to share a small .txt file. If the browser still disallows sharing, the converter will copy the text to the clipboard and show a message. If clipboard access is blocked by the browser, you’ll be shown a manual copy dialog as the final fallback.
Download file name
Simply enter your preferred name in the input field. If you leave it blank, the file will be saved using the default name “Converted-PDF-to-Text.txt.” You can also copy the text into your own editor and save it under any name you like.
Privacy & security — what happens to your files
This is important: the converter runs entirely in your browser. That means:
- Your uploaded PDF is processed locally on your device — it is not uploaded to our servers.
- No files, contents, or results are stored on the website or hosting server.
- Local browser fallbacks (clipboard or downloads) are used when sharing is unavailable.
If you need a permanently saved copy in the cloud, you will have to explicitly upload the downloaded file to your cloud storage.
How it works (technical, short)
The tool uses a client-side PDF library that reads the PDF structure and extracts any text layer present inside the file. It does this page-by-page and concatenates the results into one editable block. Images are ignored because they don’t contain selectable text unless the PDF was created with OCR.
Supported devices & browsers
- Modern desktops and laptops (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari)
- Mobile browsers — Chrome and Firefox on Android, Safari on iOS (some share behavior depends on HTTPS and browser support)
- Works offline once the page is loaded because everything runs locally
That’s it — use the buttons above in this order: Upload → Convert → Download/Share. It’s built to be simple because you just want the text out of a PDF, quickly and privately.
